Title: Integration & demonstration of network-wide green strategies
Start month:  M25 M28 (Jan 2013)
End month:  M36 M39 (Dec 2013)
Leader: TELIT
Participants:  CNIT  ALU  MLX  LQDE  TEI  TELIT  GRNET  NASK  NVR  ETY
Objectives:
  • Select a suitable set of green device prototypes from T6.2 in order to compose the large-scale real and complex network contests as specified in T2.1.
  • The selected network scenarios will represent a whole operator networks with a mix of emulated and real devices, where a complete part of network (i.e. inclusive of CPEs, access and metro/core network parts) will be fully realized with the prototypical green devices integrated in this task.
  • Complete the selected prototypes with the green control-plane strategies and protocols for supporting traffic engineering with protocols from MPLS family and/or OAM centralized frameworks. The criteria in such a case will consist of selecting the most stable and promising prototypes working at the metro, the transport and the core levels, where the inclusion of the novel energy-aware control plane processes will be feasible and viable.
  • In detail, integrate the selected green devices with:
    • the distributed optimization procedures (T5.2) and corresponding protocol extensions (T5.4);
    • the entire framework for distributed energy- and performance-aware monitoring (frameworks from T5.3 and signalling protocols from T5.4).
  • Interface such control and monitoring processes, running inside the prototypes, with the Green Abstraction Layer (that will be already working on such prototypes) by developing the needed SW modules.
  • Set up:
    • one complete test-beds for the large-scale evaluation, validation and demonstration of ECONET achievements.
    • two small scale testbeds also in the sites of NASK and GRNET for specific tests related with their networks. In such a case, IP router and L2 switch prototypes will be evaluated in internal network links or in parallel with ISP equipment in production networks.
  • Evaluate the performance, validate and demonstrate the overall energy-savings, the novel capabilities, the network-wide optimization form dynamic mechanisms and centralized OAM solutions. In this evaluation phase all the criteria, the targets and the metrics specified in T2.1 and T2.3 will be adopted.
  • The validation activity will also take into account the internetworking operations with "energy-unaware" commercial (and in use) devices.
