Title: Link Protocols
Start month:  M7 M8 (May 2011)
End month:  M21 M27 (Dec 2012)
Leader: MLX
Participants:  MLX  LQDE  VTT  ETY
Objectives:
  • Starting from the T2.2 indications, analyse the selected hardware technologies and their capabilities from the point of view of link layer protocol design.
  • Set rule based action at HW link level to minimize power consumption. Propose extensions to existing link layer protocols allowing a network interface to respond to or initiate power scaling or active sleeping at the other end of the link.
  • Identify, by simulation and emulation, rules and protocols to trigger such actions in response to link state information.
  • Incorporate support for these protocol extensions in the hardware of network interface cards for "lossless" Ethernet, ADSL and VDSL with DSM capabilities.
  • Propose an interface between these protocols and the Green Abstraction Layer, allowing it to override link-level energy management decisions.
